Elements & Principles of Design
Description: For this activity we went around and took pictures of the different elements and principles of art/design we could find in everyday life!
Line: I took this photo of a crosswalk on campus as a representation of line. The lines painted of the road are bold and clearly visible for people to see!
Value: This is a piece of artwork hanging in the library that is a great representation of value. You can clearly see the different light and dark shades of grey, black, and white used.
Pattern: This brick wall is a good example of a repeated pattern or repetition. Although the bricks are not all the same color there is still a pattern of the shape and size of each brick.
Variety: This photo of a vending machine is a great example of variety. I could also be used for unity! Although there are different drinks in each spot, the rows and columns are the same, creating a sense of unity.
Space: This photo shows space and depth, here you can see the closest pole looks larger while the pole further away appears to be smaller!
Extension Activity: For this activity I would have students each take their own set of pictures, much like I did here, incorporating all of the elements and principles of design. Then I would have students print the pictures and create a collage to share with the class. The collage can include any mediums to supplement the elements of design, for example a student could include yarn in their collage as a representation of texture. However the main requirement will be to have a picture for each element/principle of art. When finished students will share with the class and then the artwork will be displayed!
